Estimated Cost

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.  Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance, or who are not using insurance, an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy.  You can ask your healthcare provider for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.  Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.  For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

Most patients who complete an initial evaluation and decide to work with individual psychotherapy can expect to make meaningful progress in 4-6 visits. Some get good results with fewer sessions.

Insurance

In order for services to be covered by insurance, you must meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis, and the diagnosis must be listed in your psychotherapy notes and insurance claims. Some services, such as financial therapy or weight management, may therefore not be eligible for insurance coverage.

I am in network for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Original Medicare Part B, and Humana Military/Tricare East.

I am an out-of-network provider for most other insurance carriers. If your plan has out-of-network benefits and you choose to use those benefits for psychotherapy, I will give you a receipt called a “superbill” to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Insurance that includes out-of-network benefits may reimburse some or even most of your fees. I encourage you to contact your insurance company before scheduling a visit, so you can fully understand the specific benefits your plan offers. When you call, ask if you have out-of-network benefits, if there is any deductible for out-of-network benefits you must meet before reimbursement starts, and the dollar reimbursement amount for the codes that will be billed.

Here is a list of codes I commonly use in my work:

  • Initial Evaluation/Psychiatric Diagnostic Evaluation: 90791
  • 30 Minute Individual Psychotherapy: 90832
  • 45 Minute individual Psychotherapy: 90834
  • Group Psychotherapy: 90853
  • Psychological Testing: 96130 and 96131
  • Neuropsychological Testing : 96132
